Edward T. Hartman was an officer in the United States Army during World War I. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for his actions as a regiment commander during the Battle of Saint-Mihiel and the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. His award citation reads: ''The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Colonel (Infantry) Edward T. Hartman, United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I. Colonel Hartman organized the 357th Infantry Regiment, 90th Division, and commanded it with extraordinary ability during its training period and throughout its active operations. To his energy, zeal, and high qualities of leadership were largely due the consistently high standards of efficiency maintained in his regiment and the successes which it achieved in the St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne offensives.''
